Other
Simple Debate

23 posts in this topic

To preface what this topic is about, it's about the recent banning of Professional as well as the general outlook on modding or contributing to it.  I'd like to go in depth and bring up some simple concepts and ask you to weigh what I say then re-evaluate his ban.

So I'd like to start off with one simple thing, the reasons for his banning (to my knowledge) are his help with updating an offset that was used in the following video:

Video Link

So if I'm understanding correctly, you banned him because he helped someone? Even then, there is no proof other than a one line sentence in a description. The facts behind this are this: The offset was updated because it was released PUBLICLY on this site. It got updated and it wasn't even released publicly. If you didn't truly want it known, you shouldn't have released it. That's on you.  It was made into an xex not an RTE and it wasn't done through Assembly or anything and it was given to Slim Shady. So help me to understand the issue? Let's just say you banned him because he contributed to something that can be used online.

Wait though, the admins of this site have released things publicly that have affected online play more than any other tool out there, i.e Assembly. So why don't you ban yourselves? OHHH WAIT, that's right. It's because you guys are the admins. Pardon me.

This site used to literally praise people for making things, and now you guys just think you're above everyone else and completely despise anything online related despite having taking stances with it in the past. Proof you ask? Great question. here you go:

Thread on this site for a public tool

AMD + Zedd's Praises

The above screenshot is just one example. People here used to be proud when new things came about. AMD even defended someone right there and we see Lord Zedd liking the comment. Now you guys have just let your egos get to you to the point that you can unjustifiably ban someone just for updating a damn offset. Seriously think about this. It's pretty damn unjustified.

Questions for this debate:

- When did modding in any way shape or form become looked down upon? Even when people are releasing new things?

- Why waste your time getting so mad at people who make online tools when you guys have?

Love,

- A3on

inb4 an Admin removes this post, or cites another reason for ban even though the ban occurred one day after the video was released. :)

Yes, he was banned because of that video.

He was banned because he took one of the mods posted on here and adapted it for the explicit purpose of cheating online. It has always been against the rules here to directly facilitate online cheating and we have always immediately banned people for doing it. There is no reason to convert something to support TU1 other than to cheat online with it, because everyone who doesn't want to cheat online always uses the base version of the game.

Yes there is:

  1. The scoreboard clearly shows that Professional is in the game with Slim Shady
  2. Professional commented on the blog post which the mod was taken from

The fact that the updated offset wasn't released publicly is even more damning because it proves that it was done in order to cheat online. If Professional had released this publicly first then we would have given him the benefit of the doubt and just assumed that Slim Shady found it independently.

We did want it to be known, but the expectation was that it would be used offline. Not to ruin the game for other people and to give us a bad name. You know, it's possible to have fun with mods without being a dick to other people. Also, just saying, we've already started to stop releasing things because of this.

There's a difference between doing something with the express purpose of cheating online with it and making something which just so happens to be usable online.

We made a gun and it was used to kill someone. You can do fun things with guns that don't involve killing people. Why should we be held accountable?

And we still do, as long as those things are intended for offline play only.

Wow, 2012? You're really digging now, aren't you?

That tool was released before Halo 4 was. You couldn't cheat online with it because there was no multiplayer to cheat in. Furthermore, if you actually read my post, you would see that it was released before any other Halo 4 modding tools were available, and that's why it was significant. Of course we wouldn't praise such a thing if it was released now.

Updating a damn offset so that it could be used to cheat online...

Modding online has always been looked down upon. There are many things you can do which don't involve ruining the game for other people (just look at Gamecheat's YouTube channel), and we continue to applaud people who put effort into making those things.

Assembly was never intended to be used online. When you start it for the first time, you even have to accept a dialog which states that you agree to this, and that you can be banned for abusing it:

I'll just leave it at that.

Weird, I remember someone in this thread that may or may not go by the name Gamecheat cheating on XBL and posting about it on Twitter. Funny how he was never banned and he was the one actually cheating, not just updating offsets. None of my business tho.

Why is this guy acting like the admins here are ban-happy...

I don't even see what there is to debate; using mods to annoy other people online is just so dumb. It ruins the game for all other players, and it's not even fun. The point of games is to have a challenge, if you strip that away there's no point to playing at all; you're basically just a monkey pushing buttons to see the number in the scoreboard go up with no meaning. Why would you even expect praise for doing something like that?

By the way, I'm pretty sure I've contracted stage 4 testicular cancer from watching that video.

Someone knows they are wrong so they try to take the conversation off topic. Regardless, I don't give a fuck about any of that anymore. None of it matters to me anymore.

Uh oh. I mean I don't think you mean bad. There's nothing on your channel showing that you cheat online or whatever. I also couldn't think of why you would have gone through all the time to make a video talking  about it for nothing.

If there's absolutely any sort of problem with Gamecheat, it's only that he usually doesn't put download links to the awesome mods he does, ;) tehe.

I have to agree with gamecheat there. Custom games are purely for entertainment, and I think modding custom games is no different from the game nights we do on this site via system link. Anyone who disagrees is really loosing sight of what the site is supposed to be againstcheating.

I'm aware of that, it was just past the edge of my screen. Not sure what that changes tho.

As defined by Microsoft, that is cheating. I fully agree with their definition.

Yeah, and Microsoft has the right to ban gamecheat for doing that. But saying that it is the same as what that Slim Shady guy is doing is absolutely absurd. People are voluntarily joining gamecheat's game and are free to leave at any time. In the worst case scenario gamecheat does something annoying and the player leaves. Gamecheat gains absolutely nothing from it, and the player isn't penalized for leaving. Refencing AMD's analogy: Gamecheat used a gun for entertainment. That gun can also be used for murder. Should Gamecheat go to jail for murder? How is this different from something like Megalo modding?

Well then that means you are also against editing campaign gamesaves, modded gametpyes, and even deadcanadian's old map variant mods from Halo 3. That definition also says not to use glitches, so I hope you haven't done any of those. Either you are the most irrational white knight I have ever seen, or you are pointlessly attacking gamecheat for a personal reason. I think the latter.

Funny actually, I don't do any of that online. I actually have not launched anything on a 360 in months, online or offline. Regardless, my main point still stands. If you would like to keep arguing it, argue it with Zedd as he agrees (shown above). I'm done here.

My point isn't affected whether you actually did anything or not. I'm saying you would have to be an idiot to completely agree with Microsoft's definition of cheating, and that you're just trying to shit on gamecheat for doing something innocuous.

The better question is then why is he on a modding site?

I do agree with AMD's post,  As he stated, you have to agree to a dialog message which clearly states the consequences for not adhering to the terms.  That alone is enough to reasonably ban someone.
